What is ADSL?

ADSL provides high speed video and data communications to residences and businesses over standard telephone lines. ADSL service is provided by connecting a pair of very high speed modems to each end of the phone line; one in the central office (ATU-C), and the other at the customer's premises (ATU-R).

Because ADSL is asymmetric, there is a measurable difference in the bit rate between the upstream (how fast you can send data) and downstream (how fast you can receive data) transmissions.

The 3Com ADSL Modem USB utilizes full rate, G.dmt, or lite, G.lite, ADSL. The speed and type of DSL your modem uses, will be determined by the type of service you have ordered from your DSL provider.

A typical ADSL installation will require either a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) Splitter or Micro filters to be used for your analog voice service. The use of these devices enables simultaneous usage of normal telephone service and the modem, with no interruption to the normal telephone service. Your DSL provider will normally supply you with a Splitter or Micro filters and explain their usage.

Ordering ADSL Service

The ADSL Modem USB has a 2-wire twisted pair standard telephone interface which can be used with an ADSL connection from your telephone company or other service provider. The service to order depends upon the services that will be configured and enabled for the modem.

This modem supports full rate ADSL. This means that a POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) Splitter must be installed in order to be able to use regular phone service at the same time as you are using your modem.

What to ask your service provider

The install is set up so that during the installation, you can choose your Service Provider from a list. This will configure all of the information necessary to establish your DSL connection. Shortcuts will be created which can be used to dial in to your Service Provider, where all you will need to enter is your user name and password.

If your Service Provider is not in the list during the install, you will choose Custom from the list, and you will need to know:

  • VPI - The Virtual Path Identifier is used for the physical DSL connection.
  • VCI - The Virtual Channel Identifier is used for the physical DSL connection.
  • The access method for their service. Either Bridged RFC1483, Routed RFC1483, PPP over Ethernet (same as Bridged RFC1483) or PPP over ATM (either LLC or VC MUX mode).
  • User Name - The is the name your Service Provider has assigned to you for your connection. May be optional.
  • Password - The password your Service Provider has assigned to you for your connection. May be optional.
  • There may be other information necessary so you can establish a network connection.

Check with your Service Provider to obtain the necessary information.
