-System Requirements

SQL Server Backup has the following system requirements:

1).Platform: 
  Windows ME/2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008/Win7 for Backup Manager.
    Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008/Win7 for Backup Agent and Storage Server.
2).Minimum hardware requirements:
    500 MHz or higher
    64 Mb or More RAM
    50 MB available hard disk space for program installation

-Download latest version

The latest version of SQL Server Backup can always be downloaded from http://www.databk.com/download.htm . If your installation file is not downloaded from www.databk.com , please click here to check the latest version  .  

-Install

ssbk.exe is the installation package file , it includes SQL Server Backup Manager , DataBK SQL Backup Agent and DataBK Storage Server programs . 

• Backup Manager : This is main management program of the product . Configuration  and most management works can be done in this program ,such making backup/restore/log shipping job , configuring the backup agent and storage server remotely .etc .

• SQL Server Backup Agent : The core program of this product . It dose the really backup , restore job that configured by  Backup Manager . It handles all communications between Storage Server and Microsoft SQL Server during backup and restore jobs, including preparing, retrieving, and processing the data packets that are sent back and forth between Microsoft SQL Server and DataBK Storage Server.

• DataBK Storage Server : It manage the backup device , and save backup data created by the Backup Agent.  During a backup job , it save the backup data to storage device that attached to storage server . When a restoration job starts , storage server read backup from device and send them to Backup Agent , which  write data back to the database .

-Upgrade

If you are using an old version of SQL Server Backup program  , we recommend you upgrade it to the latest version . 

Upgrade from 6.x or earlier version

The software architecture have been changed a lot since 7.0 version , if you are using 6.x or earlier version of the product ,you can not upgrade the old version by just overwriting its old files simply.   

You have two ways to upgrade your current software to its latest version.

The first way is simple and safe  ,  and is recommended by us:

• Stop all scheduled jobs created by old version of this product (By clicking "Scheduler" link button and delete all scheduled tasks listed.) . This step is very important  , or the old scheduled backup will confuse new version of this product , you may be unable to  restore your database in case it fails.
• Install the latest version of this product to another directory. 
• Configure new backup job and schedule for your databases .
• After new full backups are executed successfully for all your databases, you can determine whether the old version is uninstalled or not  . If you think that old backups are still valuable and do not want to restore database to latest state, you can keep old version for some days.

The second way is :

• Stop all scheduled jobs created by old version of this product , do this step just we instructed in the first way.
• Install the latest version of this product to new directory, run and learn what a virtual backup device is in 7.x version or later of this product.
• Configure a virtual backup device on a certain directory or the directory of your old backups , copy old backups if necessarily to this backup device.
• Import old backups to new version of this product by using "Import backup" function.
• Uninstall the old version at any time you want.

Upgrade from 7.x or later version

If you are using a 7.x or later version ,  you can do following steps to upgrade it to latest version:

• For safe reason , please copy all files in old installation directory to another folder to backup old files for this product, they can be recovery once you failed to upgrade to new version .
• Uninstall your current version of this product . 
• After step 2 , some files are still left in installation directory , to keep your previous work , please DO NOT DELETE these files , this is very important.
• Install the latest version of this product  to the original installation directory .
• If the Storage Server is installed individually on another machine , please do the same steps above to upgrade it form old version .
• If you success upgrade it to this new version , old catalog file is rename to a file with a day and time file extension . Open the new program  and checked the old job settings , if some fields are changed or incorrect , please correct them.
• If you fail to upgrade the program , please copy the old files back to installation folder and contact us at support@databk.com.
